Barry County Bail Bonds
About Barry County
Barry County is located in central southern part of the state of Michigan. Named after President Andrew Jackson’s Postmaster General (William T. Barry), Barry County remains mostly agricultural. Hastings, the county’s largest city, is relatively small, with just over 7,000 people. Historically, this area was favored by the Ottawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi Indians as a superb hunting ground, and even today, the county retains 15,000 acres for hunting, the Barry State Game Area.
Beginning in the 1830s, settlers that moved to the area built grist mills along the Thornapple River. With the lumber industry’s needs in mind, these developers viewed the river an excellent distribution source. Today, much of Barry County’s land is used for agricultural purposes and dairy farming.
Located halfway between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Hastings also shares commuter traffic between the two. The city retains an historic small town aspect with its Victorian house-lined streets. And Gun Lake, being one of the the largest lakes in Michigan, is used by many for recreational activities. Gun Lake Casino is another significant draw in the area.
Crime statistics kept by the State of Michigan for Barry County reveal that this is a safe, family friendly place to live, but assaults, thefts, DUI driving charges, and drug arrests do occur.
